Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Buying a Miniature American Shepherd puppy

The breed joined the RKC's Imported Breed Register on 1 July 2026, so check whether each litter will be registered and ask how the parents were bred or imported. Breeders on caninebreeder.co.uk show their name, website, social media, location and categories, so you can compare them and get in touch directly. When you enquire, ask what health screening and DNA testing the parents have had and what colour they are, and arrange to see the puppies with their mother. Be open about your lifestyle: this is a herding breed that needs one to two hours of exercise a day and regular training. Adult height can fall above or below the range in the standard, so no breeder can promise an exact size. We are an independent directory and do not inspect or endorse breeders, so please make your own checks.

Health tests to ask about

The RKC lists one Good Practice priority for the Miniature American Shepherd: prioritising genetic diversity. It lists no Best Practice tests, offers no breed-specific DNA testing package and sets no breed-specific breeding restrictions. In practice, that means checking the inbreeding coefficient of each planned mating, aiming at or below the breed average.

Outside the RKC's list, the US parent club, the Miniature American Shepherd Club of the USA (MASCUSA), names hip X-ray evaluation, an annual eye examination and DNA tests for PRA-prcd, MDR1 (multiple drug sensitivity), HSF4 hereditary cataract and neuroaxonal dystrophy (NAD) as required for its health programmes. In the UK, the BVA/RKC/ISDS Eye Scheme is open to any dog, and hips can be scored under the BVA/RKC Hip Dysplasia Scheme. The Miniature American Shepherd is not on the BVA's January 2026 list of breeds with known inherited eye disease, although its ancestor, the Australian Shepherd, is listed for hereditary cataract.

Merle is a standard colour in this breed, but the RKC does not register puppies from merle-to-merle matings, because dogs with two copies of the merle gene have a higher risk of blindness and deafness.

The breed is in Breed Watch Category 1, with no breed-specific concerns flagged for show judges. Health testing reduces risk but cannot guarantee a healthy puppy.
