Visit the breeder’s home. The mother should be there with her puppies.
Check the licence
Ask for the licence number and the council’s name. Licensed breeders must show both.
Ask about health tests
Good breeders test the parents for problems their breed can have, and show you the results.
Never pay before you visit
Do not send money for a puppy you have not seen with its mother.
What the stars mean
In England, councils inspect licensed breeders and give them one to five stars. More stars means higher welfare standards and a longer licence.
Councils in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland license breeders too, but they do not give stars. The numbers are licensed breeders listed here today.
Licensed breeders listed here by council star rating
No. You contact the breeder yourself, visit, and agree everything with them. We never take money for a puppy, so never pay anyone who says they are us.
Is it free?
Yes for families. Breeders can list for free too. Some extras for breeders cost money, and anything paid for is labelled on the page.
How do you know a breeder is licensed?
We copy licence details from the public registers that councils publish. Always ask the breeder to show you the licence too.
Why do some breeders have no breed listed?
Council registers often do not say which breeds a breeder keeps. The breeder adds them when they claim their listing.
What is a mixed breeder?
A breeder of crossbreeds such as Cockapoos, or of litters whose parents are two different breeds.
