Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Using a Bracco Italiano stud dog

UK owners list Bracco Italiano stud dogs here. Before booking, ask for the dog's hip score under the BVA/KC Hip Dysplasia Scheme, his elbow grade and a current eye certificate, and check them on the RKC Health Test Results Finder. The BVA/KC schemes recommend breeding only from dogs with hip scores below or close to the breed median and from elbow grade 0 dogs. Check that he is registered with The Royal Kennel Club; the Bracco Italiano Club code of ethics asks members to breed only from Kennel Club registered stock and to use health-tested overseas sires where possible. Put the pairing through the RKC's inbreeding coefficient calculator, long known to breeders as Mate Select, and aim for a result at or below the breed average. The code also sets a minimum stud age of two years and makes stud and bitch owners jointly responsible for rehoming puppies. Agree the fee and terms in writing.

Health tests for a Bracco Italiano stud

The Royal Kennel Club's Bracco Italiano page lists prioritising genetic diversity as good practice, and hip and elbow screening under the BVA/KC schemes as best practice. There is no breed-specific DNA test package. The breed is in Breed Watch Category 1, meaning no breed-specific points of concern have been flagged for judges. The RKC gives a lifespan of under ten years.

The Bracco Italiano Club UK health pages cover several conditions. Hereditary kidney disease, including amyloidosis, is most often diagnosed at around five years of age, although the club reports cases in dogs just over a year old. It also describes entropion, ectropion and cherry eye; hip and elbow dysplasia; skin, ear and hot spot problems, for which it suggests thyroid screening before breeding; and a bowing of the front legs in some puppies that it does not believe is inherited. The club records sensitivity to certain sedatives, so tell your vet the breed before any procedure. Its code of ethics requires hip and elbow scores before mating and current eye certificates.
