Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Using a Field Spaniel stud dog

In a breed as small as the Field Spaniel, one stud dog's influence spreads quickly, so choosing a sire affects the breed as well as the litter. Genetic diversity is the RKC's Good Practice priority for Fields: before agreeing a mating, run the pair through the RKC's online inbreeding coefficient calculator and aim for a predicted COI at or below the breed average. For Best Practice the stud should be RKC registered with a BVA/KC hip score, a BVA/KC elbow grade and a BVA/KC/ISDS eye certificate, and the RKC advises that adult dogs are eye examined within 12 months before mating. The Field Spaniel Society's health guidance also covers heart checks by auscultation. Stud owners should share results openly, ask the same of the bitch's owner, and agree fees and terms in writing.

Health tests for a Field Spaniel stud

The RKC Health Standard for the Field Spaniel places one item under Good Practice, the minimum the RKC strongly recommends before any mating: prioritising genetic diversity. With so few puppies registered each year, the choice of mate carries weight for the whole breed, so breeders should check the predicted coefficient of inbreeding for each pairing and avoid heavy use of a few popular sires. Best Practice adds hip scoring, elbow grading and an eye examination under the BVA canine health schemes. The RKC does not offer a breed-specific DNA testing package for the Field Spaniel, although individual DNA tests are available.

The Field Spaniel Society's health pages also describe heart checks by stethoscope (auscultation) and pass on the BVA advice of yearly eye examinations. Topics raised at the Society's health seminars include hypothyroidism, incomplete ossification of the humeral condyle (IOHC, an elbow condition) and mammary tumours, and the Society worked with the RKC on a breed health survey in 2023. The breed is in Breed Watch Category 1. Screening lowers the risk of inherited disease but cannot guarantee a healthy puppy.
