Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Using a Large Munsterlander stud dog

Large Munsterlander stud dogs on this page are offered by their UK owners. Before agreeing a mating, ask for the dog's BVA/KC hip score and elbow grade, his HUU DNA result and an eye certificate from the last 12 months, and confirm them on the RKC Health Test Results Finder. If you are considering an overseas stud, the RKC will register the litter only if the sire is proven HUU clear or carrier. Use the RKC COI calculator to check the planned litter's inbreeding coefficient; the RKC's guidance is to aim at or below the breed average, and its genetic diversity advice warns against overusing popular sires. The Large Munsterlander Club also mentions coat colour testing, because two black and white dogs that both carry the recessive brown gene can produce brown puppies. Both dogs should be RKC registered with no endorsement that blocks registration. Stud owners can list a dog here.

Health tests for a Large Munsterlander stud

The RKC's health guidance lists three Good Practice measures for the Large Munsterlander, the minimum it strongly recommends before breeding: prioritising genetic diversity, hip scoring and elbow grading. Hip scores run from 0 to 106, lower being better, and the RKC advises choosing breeding stock around or below the breed median; the BVA recommends breeding only from dogs with an elbow grade of 0. Best Practice adds a DNA test for hyperuricosuria (HUU), a recessive condition in which uric acid can form urinary stones, and an eye examination under the BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme. The BVA's known inherited eye diseases list names hereditary cataract for the breed. There is no DNA test for it, so the Large Munsterlander Club says dogs used for breeding should be eye tested every year. The club also says it requires breeders to complete all the Best Practice tests, and its members may mate only HUU-tested dogs.

Since 6 January 2025, the RKC registers imported Large Munsterlanders, and litters by overseas sires, only if the dog or sire is proven HUU clear or carrier, or is hereditarily clear, and identified carriers may be bred only to a clear or hereditarily clear partner. The breed is in Breed Watch Category 1.
