Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Breed Watch asks judges to watch for overweight dogs and poor hind movement, so see him move and judge his condition. Confirm he is RKC registered with no breeding endorsement that would block registration of the puppies, as the RKC's advice on finding a suitable mate suggests, and agree the stud fee, puppy arrangements and what happens if no litter results in writing. Health tests for a Pyrenean Mountain Dog stud

The RKC Pyrenean Mountain Dog page lists prioritising genetic diversity as Good Practice before breeding, and three screening schemes as Best Practice: hip scoring, elbow grading and eye examination. Breeders following Best Practice complete both sets. RKC Breed Watch lists the breed in Category 2, for breeds whose visible, conformation-related concerns need closer monitoring; judges are asked to look out for dogs that are too fat and for incorrect hind conformation or poor rear movement. The Breed Watch panel on the breed information page showed Category 1 when we checked in September 2026, but the Breed Watch pages themselves list Category 2. There is no RKC DNA testing package for the breed, although individual DNA tests are available.

The breed's Health and Conservation Plan, reviewed with breed representatives in March 2021 and published on the PMDC of GB breed information page, named osteosarcoma, arthritis, osteochondrodysplasia, and hot spots and other skin conditions as priorities. The RKC is moving these plans into its breeding for health framework. Results recorded with the RKC can be checked on the Health Test Results Finder, and the inbreeding coefficient calculator shows how closely two dogs are related.
