Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Buying a Clumber Spaniel puppy

Fewer than 300 Clumber Spaniels are registered with the RKC each year, so litters are infrequent and it helps to research breeders before one is due. When you find a Clumber litter advertised, check that the puppies will be RKC registered and ask for the parents' hip and elbow results, eye certificates, and EIC and PDP-1 DNA results. Visit the puppies where they were raised and meet their mother; the Clumber Spaniel Club suggests looking for clean puppies whose eyes are clear and bright, without any discharge. Be sure you want a large, heavy spaniel that sheds, drools and needs room and daily walks. The club advises that puppies should be at least eight weeks old before they leave. Health tests to ask about

Health

The Clumber Spaniel is in Breed Watch Category 2. The RKC asks show judges to watch for eyelids that roll inwards or outwards instead of sitting against the eye, obvious ear irritation, excess weight, and faulty hind construction or poor movement behind.

The RKC's good-practice list covers hip and elbow X-rays, a clinical eye examination and, since December 2025, a DNA test for exercise induced collapse (EIC), which was added to the list in June 2025. The RKC says EIC is highly prevalent in the breed and advises breeding it out gradually, which includes using tested carriers mated to clear dogs, so that genetic diversity is not lost too quickly. A DNA test for PDP-1 is listed as best practice; the Clumber Spaniel Club describes PDP-1 as rare in the breed and usually fatal before three months of age. The club's health guide lists ear infections, skin allergies and eyelid problems among the issues commonly reported, along with dry eye, and says disc disease has been found more often than in most breeds. Screening lowers the risk of inherited disease but cannot guarantee a healthy puppy.
