Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Buying a Japanese Chin puppy

Searching for Japanese Chin puppies for sale? When we checked in September 2026, the RKC's Find a Puppy service showed just one Japanese Chin litter in the whole of the UK, so be prepared to join a waiting list. The breeder listings on caninebreeder.co.uk show each kennel's location, website, social links and categories, which makes it easier to draw up a shortlist and contact breeders directly. Ask to see both parents' eye certificates and whether they have been graded under the new breathing scheme, then check registered dogs on the RKC Health Test Results Finder. Always view the litter with its mother. Licensed breeders cannot sell a puppy under eight weeks old, and the Japanese Chin Club asks its members to wait until 12 weeks. We do not inspect breeders, so read our buyer safety guide before paying anything.

Health tests to ask about

The Japanese Chin Club describes the Chin as normally a healthy companion that often lives 10 to 12 years or more, though, as in other toy breeds, problems can occur. On its breed page the RKC lists prioritising genetic diversity as Good Practice, and eye testing under the BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme as Best Practice.

In August 2026 the RKC recognised breathing testing for brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) in the Chin, using the Respiratory Function Grading Scheme it developed with the University of Cambridge. The RKC says this test will be added formally to the Health Standard and Find a Puppy from January 2027 at Best Practice level. Dogs can be assessed from 12 months old: a vet listens to the breathing before and after three minutes of brisk exercise and grades the dog from 0 to 3, and the RKC advises repeating the test every two years while the dog is used for breeding.

The breed club has run heart checks at shows and found some significant murmurs in older dogs, and its code of ethics recommends testing hearts, patellas, eyes and breathing. The RKC places the Chin in Breed Watch Category 1. Health testing lowers risk but cannot guarantee a healthy puppy.
