Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Health tests to ask about

The RKC lists no DNA test or screening scheme for the Lowchen, and the breed's entry in the RKC Health Standard carries no tests. Instead, the RKC breed page gives one Good Practice priority: prioritising genetic diversity. That matters in a breed where fewer than 100 puppies are registered each year, and the Lowchen Club traces the post-war breed to three foundation dogs. The RKC asks breeders to check the inbreeding coefficient of a planned litter with its online calculator and to aim for a figure at or below the breed's annual average, ideally as low as possible. It also warns against overusing popular sires, and asks breeders to take account of recent imports and the number of generations behind the calculation.

Eye examinations under the BVA/RKC/ISDS Eye Scheme are open to any dog, but the Lowchen is not on the BVA's 2026 list of breeds with a known inherited eye disease. The breed is in Breed Watch Category 1, meaning the RKC has not identified visible health concerns linked to its conformation. Careful breeding reduces risk but cannot guarantee a healthy puppy.
