Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Buying a Smooth Coat Chihuahua puppy

Two smooth-coated parents can produce long-coated puppies, and the RKC registers those as Long Coat Chihuahuas, so ask which coat each puppy has. The RKC gives a lifespan of over 12 years and suggests up to half an hour of exercise a day, but a tiny dog still needs training, socialising and company. Health tests to ask about

The RKC lists two best practice health checks for the Smooth Coat Chihuahua. The first is a clinical eye examination under the BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme, carried out by a BVA-appointed eye panellist; the RKC eye scheme guidance advises examining breeding dogs within the 12 months before a mating. The second is new. In August 2026 the RKC recognised breathing assessment for brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) under the Respiratory Function Grading scheme, and says the test will be added to its Health Standard and Find a Puppy from January 2027. The scheme, run with the University of Cambridge, grades dogs from 0 to 3 after a short exercise test; dogs can be assessed from 12 months and should be regraded every two years while they are bred from. The RKC does not currently offer a breed-specific DNA testing package for the breed.

The breed is in Breed Watch Category 2. The points of concern for show judges are incorrect bite or teeth (including retained puppy teeth and missing or misplaced teeth), wry jaw, and an excessively short muzzle. The RKC will not register merle puppies, or puppies from a merle parent, because of the risk to hearing and sight.
