Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Buying a Toy Poodle puppy

Searching for Toy Poodle puppies for sale? The breed standard asks for an adult under 28 cm at the shoulder, but the RKC points out that an individual dog can end up larger or smaller than the standard, so ask how big the parents and earlier puppies are. The curly coat will need daily brushing and a clip every four to eight weeks for life, and a good breeder will already have started getting puppies used to handling and grooming. Ask for the prcd-PRA result for both parents, confirm it on the RKC Health Test Results Finder, and always meet the puppies with their mother. Adverts for 'rare' colours deserve extra care: the RKC classes particolour, sable and black and tan as non-breed-standard colours, and the Poodle Council says the RKC will not register merle in the breed. Health tests to ask about

The RKC lists one Good Practice test for the Toy Poodle, which it strongly recommends breeders carry out at a minimum before breeding: the DNA test for progressive retinal atrophy (prcd-PRA). PRA makes the cells of the retina degenerate, usually starting with night blindness and moving on to loss of sight. It is inherited as an autosomal recessive condition, so a puppy is only affected if it inherits the faulty gene from both parents. Under Best Practice, the RKC adds eye examination through the BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme and hip scoring through the BVA/KC Hip Dysplasia Scheme, for which the BVA requires dogs to be at least one year old. The RKC has no additional breed-specific breeding restrictions for the Toy Poodle.

The Poodle Council's Toy Poodle health page names a Toy Poodle health co-ordinator for owners who want to report a problem. Its list of known Poodle health issues includes sebaceous adenitis, Addison's disease, von Willebrand disease, epilepsy and PRA (rcd4), so ask a breeder what they know about these in their lines.
