Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Using a Bullmastiff stud dog

This page lists Bullmastiff stud dogs offered by UK owners. Before arranging a mating, ask for the dog's hip score under the BVA/KC Hip Dysplasia Scheme, his elbow grade and a current eye certificate, and confirm them on the RKC Health Test Results Finder. The BVA recommends breeding only from dogs whose hip scores are under, or near, the published breed median, and whose elbows are graded 0. Confirm that the stud is on the RKC register, and check the pairing with the RKC's inbreeding coefficient calculator, known to many breeders as Mate Select; in a breed with so few registrations, avoiding close matings helps protect genetic diversity. The Bullmastiff Breed Council code of ethics says a stud should not be used on a bitch that falls outside its age and litter limits, or one that is not fit and well. Health tests for a Bullmastiff stud

The Royal Kennel Club lists three good practice screening schemes for the Bullmastiff: hip scoring, elbow grading and the eye scheme. The RKC has no breed-specific DNA test package for the Bullmastiff at present. The breed is in Breed Watch Category 2, which the RKC applies to breeds with visible conformation concerns that it watches more closely. The Bullmastiff points of concern are eyelids turned inwards or outwards and excess loose skin about the head and body. The RKC's Bullmastiff page also carries its general guidance on flat-faced dogs, covering breathing difficulties and skin fold problems.

Under the BVA/KC Hip Dysplasia Scheme, dogs are X-rayed from one year old and scored from 0 to 106, with lower scores better, and the BVA advises breeding from dogs scoring under or near the breed median. The elbow scheme grades each joint from 0 to 3, and the BVA recommends breeding only from grade 0 dogs.
