Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Using a Cavapoo stud dog

Anyone offering a stud for Cavapoo litters, whether a Toy Poodle, a Cavalier or a Cavapoo, should be ready to share his full health record. A Cavalier stud should have a current RKC heart scheme certificate, which covers an age bracket and expires at the start of the next, plus DNA results for CC/DE and EF and an eye examination from the 12 months before mating. A Toy Poodle stud should be DNA tested for prcd-PRA, eye tested and, ideally, hip scored under the BVA/KC scheme. Pure-bred studs should be RKC registered so their results appear on the Health Test Results Finder and their own inbreeding coefficients can be looked up with the RKC calculators, which draw on RKC pedigree records. A crossbred stud has no RKC pedigree, so keep clear records of his ancestry to help bitch owners avoid related pairings. Put the fee and terms in writing.

Health tests for a Cavapoo stud

The RKC has no health test list for the Cavapoo, because it is not a recognised breed, so each parent should be tested for the conditions the RKC recommends for its own breed. The BVA canine health schemes are open to crossbred dogs too.

The RKC names mitral valve disease (MVD), syringomyelia and inherited eye disease as the three main issues screened for in Cavaliers. Its heart scheme accepts Cavaliers from 18 months and recommends grading at 2, 4 and 6 years; red-graded dogs should not be bred from. Syringomyelia is diagnosed by MRI. The BVA Chiari malformation/syringomyelia (CM/SM) scheme grades scans and is open to all dogs, but it is not on the RKC's recommended list, so treat it as an optional extra for the Cavalier parent. The Cavalier is in Breed Watch Category 2, with concerns about eye discomfort, protruding eyes and hind movement; the Toy Poodle is in Category 1.

CC/DE and EF are recessive, so a puppy is affected only if both parents pass on the variant. From F1b onwards both parents may have Cavalier ancestry, so test both. No set of tests can guarantee a healthy puppy.
