Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Using a Coton De Tulear stud dog

If you stand a Coton de Tulear at stud, visiting bitch owners will expect RKC registration, a BVA/KC/ISDS eye examination, which the RKC advises having within 12 months before mating, and the DNA tests the Coton de Tuléar Club of the United Kingdom advises: CMR2, MH, DM, HUU, PH1, vWD1 and CDDY, with CDPA also recommended. The club classes the first six as recessive, and its tables show that pairing a carrier with a clear mate is not expected to produce affected puppies, though about half may be carriers; the RKC advises never mating a carrier to an untested dog. CDDY works differently, as the club explains that one copy is enough to raise IVDD risk. Keep certificates to hand for an imported stud, run each pairing through the RKC inbreeding coefficient calculator, aim at or below the breed average COI, avoid overusing one dog, and agree the fee and terms in writing.

Health tests for a Coton De Tulear stud

On its breed page the RKC lists one good-practice step for the Coton de Tulear before breeding: prioritising genetic diversity. It advises checking the predicted coefficient of inbreeding (COI) of a planned litter with the RKC inbreeding coefficient calculator and aiming at or below the annual breed average. As best practice it adds eye testing under the BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme, and it notes that the breed club runs its own health scheme. The RKC has no DNA test bundle aimed at the Coton, though single DNA tests can be bought.

The Coton de Tuléar Club of the United Kingdom advises members to DNA test dogs before breeding, noting that the RKC did not require this when the advice was published, and asks anyone buying an imported dog to obtain copies of its certificates. The club's list covers inherited eye, muscle, spinal cord, urinary, kidney, bleeding and disc-related conditions, and it also publishes guidance on intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), older dogs and kidney failure. The breed is in Breed Watch Category 1, the RKC's group for breeds whose build currently raises no visible health worries in the show ring.
