Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Using a Eurasier stud dog

A Eurasier stud dog offered to other breeders should be RKC registered and screened under the three BVA/KC schemes in the RKC's Best Practice list for the breed: hips, elbows and eyes. Bitch owners following the Eurasier Society UK health scheme will also want to see his patella examination, thyroid profile and DWLM DNA result. The RKC's Good Practice priority for the Eurasier is genetic diversity, and in a small population heavy use of one sire can reduce it quickly. Run each proposed mating through the RKC inbreeding coefficient calculator and aim for a predicted COI at or below the breed average; the Society can also provide COI figures based on complete pedigrees from its own database. Results for registered dogs can be checked on the RKC Health Test Results Finder. Temperament is central to the breed standard, so share what you know about the stud's relatives, and agree fees and terms in writing before the mating.

Health tests for a Eurasier stud

For the Eurasier, the RKC's Good Practice step before breeding is prioritising genetic diversity. Its Best Practice list adds three screening schemes: elbow grading under the BVA/KC Elbow Dysplasia Scheme, eye testing under the BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme and hip scoring under the BVA/KC Hip Dysplasia Scheme. The RKC says responsible breeders should complete the tests in both lists. Hip and elbow X-rays can only be submitted once a dog is at least a year old and microchipped, and the BVA advises breeding only from dogs with elbow grade 0 and from dogs with hip scores below or close to the breed median.

The Eurasier Society UK asks that any Eurasier considered for breeding is tested for the main conditions found in the breed that may be inherited. Its list covers hips and elbows, patellar luxation (checked by a vet on a conscious dog), eyes (entropion, ectropion, distichiasis and gonioscopy), thyroid function by blood test, and a DNA test for Dandy-Walker-like malformation (DWLM). The Society also recommends COI calculations that cover as much of the pedigree as possible. The RKC does not offer a breed-specific DNA testing package for the Eurasier. The breed is in Breed Watch Category 1.
