Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Confirm that he is RKC registered and free of breeding endorsements. Use the RKC inbreeding coefficient calculator to see how closely he is related to your bitch, and ask how many litters he has already sired, as heavy use of one dog narrows the gene pool. Check that his height falls within the Mittel range of 30 to 38 cm.

Health tests for a German Spitz (Mittel) stud

For the German Spitz (Mittel), the RKC names a single screening test at Best Practice level: an eye examination under the BVA/RKC/ISDS Eye Scheme. Its Good Practice advice is to prioritise genetic diversity, for example by avoiding over-use of popular sires. The RKC suggests eye examinations for breeding dogs in the 12 months before a mating and a final examination at eight years for dogs that have been bred from.

The breed is not on the BVA's January 2026 list of breeds with known inherited eye diseases, but both UK breed clubs name retinal dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy as eye concerns in the German Spitz. The German Spitz Club of Great Britain's code of ethics requires members to hold an eye certificate from the 12 months before mating. It also recommends litter screening, hip scoring, patella scoring and testing for von Willebrand disease; the German Spitz Breeders and Owners Club notes that a DNA test exists for the type I form. The clubs also list fitting, including idiopathic epilepsy, and paroxysmal dyskinesia, a movement disorder.

The Mittel is in Breed Watch Category 2, with judges asked to watch for visible eye irritation or discomfort, including redness, discharge and tear staining. No health test can guarantee that a puppy will stay healthy.
