Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Using a Miniature Smooth Haired Dachshund stud dog

Before booking a mating, ask for the dog's grade under the RKC IVDD scheme; the RKC publishes a traffic-light guide to grade pairings and says high-risk pairings should never knowingly be made. The stud should also have a cord1 PRA DNA result and, as the RKC advises, an eye examination within 12 months before mating. Dachshund Health UK reports an RKC policy requiring dogs listed as hereditary clear to be DNA tested again after two generations, so ask when the line was last tested. Confirm every result on the Health Test Results Finder, check the dog is registered with The Royal Kennel Club, and run the pairing through the RKC's online inbreeding coefficient calculator, aiming at or below the breed average. Never pair two dapples, as the RKC will not register the litter. Agree the fee and terms in writing.

Health tests for a Miniature Smooth Haired Dachshund stud

Dachshund Health UK identifies back disease, intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), as the most frequent health problem in the breed in the UK. In IVDD, spinal discs harden early and can herniate, causing pain, poor coordination or loss of use of the legs. The RKC cites the breed council's DachsLife 2018 survey, in which 29.9% of Miniature Smooths over three years old had been reported with IVDD, the highest of the six varieties. The IVDD scheme X-rays dogs aged 24 to 48 months, counts calcified discs and grades the spine from 0 (none) to 3 (five or more). One screening lasts for life. The RKC says grading reduces risk but cannot guarantee an unaffected puppy.

All three miniature varieties can inherit cord1 PRA, a recessive mutation that causes night blindness and usually progresses to loss of sight. It was first thought to appear at around two years, but some affected dogs are not diagnosed until as late as ten. The RKC places the variety in Breed Watch Category 2, for breeds with visible conformation-related concerns needing closer monitoring; judges are asked to look for thin dogs, sore or weeping eyes, poor hind movement and too little ground clearance. The RKC will not register puppies from dapple-to-dapple matings made on or after 1 January 2010.
