About the Hound group
The Hound group covers breeds developed to hunt, broadly in two ways. Sighthounds such as the Greyhound, Whippet, Saluki and Deerhound hunt by sight and speed. Scenthounds such as the Beagle, Basset Hound, Bloodhound and Foxhound follow a scent trail, often in packs and over long distances.
Hounds were bred to work independently of a handler, so many have a strong chase instinct and need secure exercise areas and patient recall training. Sighthounds are often calm at home but can be sensitive to cold; scenthounds tend to be vocal and single-minded when following a scent.
