The Grand Bleu de Gascogne is a tall French scent hound from Gascony in south-west France. The Royal Kennel Club (RKC) places it in the Hound Group and holds it on the Imported Breed Register, where it stays until the RKC judges it established enough for the main Breed Register. The FCI breed standard describes it as a very old breed that formed the 14th-century packs of Gaston Fébus, Count of Foix, who hunted wolf, bear and boar with it, and treats it as the root of the southern French scent hounds. The RKC breed page adds that it was later used on hare and that, like many French hounds, it came to England with the Norman Conquest. It is very rare here, with just three RKC registrations from 2016 to 2025.

Size and build

The RKC breed standard describes it as among the bigger French hunting hounds, with a long, distinguished head. Dogs stand 64 to 70 cm (25 to 27½ in) and bitches 60 to 65 cm (23½ to 25½ in). The fine ears are set below the eye line, curl inwards and reach just past the nose. The skin forms a wrinkle or two on the cheeks, but the standard treats excessive loose skin as highly undesirable. The tail is carried in a sickle curve and the stride is long and loose.

Coat and grooming

The smooth, weather-resistant coat is white covered with black mottling, which gives the blue look behind the name. Black patches cover the ears and surround the eyes, and a tan spot above each eye creates the "four-eyed" effect. The RKC lists blue and fawn tricolour, tricolour, and blue, black and tan. It suggests grooming once a week, and the coat sheds.

Exercise

The RKC lists more than two hours of exercise a day, a large house and a large garden. The RKC standard notes a keen nose and a deep bay, and the FCI standard describes an instinctive pack hound, so recall work, secure fencing and outlets such as scentwork or trailing matter.

Temperament and suitability

It means the breed is on the RKC Imported Breed Register. Registered dogs can enter RKC working trials, obedience, agility, flyball, heelwork to music, rally and handling straight away, but entry to other RKC licensed events is limited to certain classes, matches and companion dog shows, and only once an interim breed standard has been published. The breed stays on this register until the RKC agrees to move it to the main Breed Register.

How big is a Grand Bleu de Gascogne?
