Is it free to advertise here?

Yes. A breeder profile and your litter and stud dog adverts are free. Premium profiles, featured placement and sponsored articles are optional paid extras; see pricing.

Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Is my listing already here?

We add licensed breeders from councils' public registers. Search for your kennel name; if it is listed you can claim it and edit everything.

Using a Norwegian Elkhound stud dog

Norwegian Elkhound stud dogs listed here are advertised by their owners. Before booking, ask for his DNA results for POAG-2 and prcd-PRA, which the RKC places at Good Practice level for this breed, and for chondrodysplasia (CDSL). A carrier of any of these recessive conditions should only be paired with a clear bitch. Ask to see an eye certificate dated within 12 months of the mating and his BVA/RKC hip score, then check that he is registered with the Royal Kennel Club and carries no endorsement that would block registration of the litter. Run the pairing through the RKC's inbreeding coefficient calculator, previously known as Mate Select, and aim for a figure at or below the breed average. Agree the stud fee and repeat-mating terms in writing before the mating.

Health tests for a Norwegian Elkhound stud

The RKC lists five health tests for the Norwegian Elkhound. At Good Practice level, which the RKC describes as the minimum before breeding, are DNA tests for primary open angle glaucoma (POAG-2) and progressive retinal atrophy (prcd-PRA), alongside prioritising genetic diversity. At Best Practice level it adds a DNA test for chondrodysplasia (CDSL), an eye examination under the BVA/RKC/ISDS Eye Scheme and hip scoring under the BVA/RKC Hip Dysplasia Scheme.

POAG is a small rise in pressure inside the eye that gradually causes blindness, usually seen between three and six years of age. prcd-PRA makes the cells of the retina degenerate, starting with night blindness. CDSL is a form of dwarfism that shortens the limbs. All three are autosomal recessive, so carriers show no signs but can pass the gene on, and should only be mated to clear dogs. The Elkhound is also on the Eye Scheme's January 2026 list of breeds with known inherited eye disease, for progressive retinal atrophy. The RKC advises an eye examination within the 12 months before mating, and a dog must be at least one year old for hip scoring, where lower scores are better. The breed is in Breed Watch Category 1. Health testing lowers risk but cannot guarantee a healthy puppy.
