Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Using a Pembroke Welsh Corgi stud dog

Before offering a Pembroke at stud, have him hip scored under the BVA/KC Hip Dysplasia Scheme, the test the RKC lists for the breed, and make sure he is RKC registered so that his litters can be registered too. Visiting bitch owners may also ask about optional DNA results, such as degenerative myelopathy or von Willebrand disease type 1, so keep copies ready. Natural bobtails are recorded by the RKC at litter registration with a vet's letter, which helps breeders see which lines carry the tailless gene. Run each proposed pairing through the RKC inbreeding coefficient calculator, formerly offered through the Kennel Club's Mate Select service, and aim for a figure at or below the breed average. Health tests for a Pembroke Welsh Corgi stud

The RKC's pre-breeding recommendation for the Pembroke is hip scoring under the BVA/KC Hip Dysplasia Scheme, listed at Best Practice level. Dogs must be at least a year old and permanently identified, by microchip or tattoo, to be scored. The RKC does not offer a breed-specific DNA testing package for the Pembroke, though individual DNA tests can be ordered.

The Welsh Corgi League says hip scoring is not yet mandatory but should be treated as best practice for all breeding stock, and stresses that the X-rays need correct positioning for a Corgi's build. The League runs an annual health survey of members' dogs, and notes that breeders overseas routinely use further tests, including DNA tests for degenerative myelopathy (DM), von Willebrand disease type 1 and exercise-induced collapse, alongside eye, elbow and heart checks. These are not on the RKC's list for the breed, but a breeder may choose to use them. The Pembroke is in Breed Watch Category 1, with no breed-specific points of concern for show judges.
