Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Buying an Afghan Hound puppy

Afghan Hound litters are planned well in advance, so it is normal to register interest with a breeder and wait. When you enquire about Afghan Hound puppies for sale on this page, ask for both parents' BVA/KC hip scores and the inbreeding coefficient of the mating, and arrange to see the puppy with its mother.

Think hard about the adult dog as well as the puppy. The RKC suggests more than two hours of exercise and grooming every day, and the parent club says a full groom can take several hours. If an older dog would suit you better, the Afghan Hound Association keeps an adoption list for Afghans needing new homes, and regional breed clubs run their own rescue sections.

Health tests to ask about

Beyond managing genetic diversity, the RKC lists one screening scheme for the Afghan Hound: hip scoring under the BVA/KC Hip Dysplasia Scheme. The dog must be at least a year old, and the hips are X-rayed under anaesthesia or heavy sedation. Specialist vets working in pairs score nine features of each hip from 0 to 53, giving a total of 0 to 106; lower is better. The BVA recommends breeding only from dogs scoring below or close to the breed median, and notes that this reduces hip dysplasia without eliminating it.

The RKC does not offer a breed-specific DNA test package for the Afghan Hound, and under Breed Watch it has identified no points of concern specific to the breed for judges.

The Western Afghan Hound Club describes the breed as generally sound, names cancer-related illness and old age as the most common problems, and says laryngeal paralysis affects a very small number of hounds. It gives an average lifespan of 12 to 14 years. The Afghan Hound Breed Council ran a UK health survey that closed on 31 August 2026; check the Afghan Hound Association site for its findings.
