Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Using an Afghan Hound stud dog

An Afghan Hound stud dog should have a BVA/KC hip score you can check, ideally below or close to the breed median. Ask to see the certificate or look him up on the RKC Health Test Results Finder. Ask too about the health and lifespan of his parents and grandparents; the Western Afghan Hound Club names cancer-related illness among the breed's most common problems.

To register the litter with the RKC, the stud must be RKC registered, and any breeding endorsement on him must be lifted before the mating. Check the proposed pairing on the RKC's free inbreeding coefficient calculator, once part of the Kennel Club's Mate Select service; the RKC advises aiming at or below the breed average. It also warns against over-using popular sires.

Meet the dog to be sure of his temperament, and set out the fee, any pick-of-litter terms and what happens if the bitch does not conceive in a written stud agreement.

Health tests for an Afghan Hound stud

Beyond managing genetic diversity, the RKC lists one screening scheme for the Afghan Hound: hip scoring under the BVA/KC Hip Dysplasia Scheme. The dog must be at least a year old, and the hips are X-rayed under anaesthesia or heavy sedation. Specialist vets working in pairs score nine features of each hip from 0 to 53, giving a total of 0 to 106; lower is better. The BVA recommends breeding only from dogs scoring below or close to the breed median, and notes that this reduces hip dysplasia without eliminating it.

The RKC does not offer a breed-specific DNA test package for the Afghan Hound, and under Breed Watch it has identified no points of concern specific to the breed for judges.

The Western Afghan Hound Club describes the breed as generally sound, names cancer-related illness and old age as the most common problems, and says laryngeal paralysis affects a very small number of hounds. It gives an average lifespan of 12 to 14 years. The Afghan Hound Breed Council ran a UK health survey that closed on 31 August 2026; check the Afghan Hound Association site for its findings.
