Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Buying a Lhasa Apso puppy

Searching for Lhasa Apso puppies for sale? This is a small dog with a long, heavy coat and a watchful nature, and the right litter is worth waiting for. When you get in touch, ask for the PRA4 DNA results of both parents and any recent eye certificates. Arrange to meet the puppies with their mother, and check that your puppy will be at least eight weeks old before it leaves. Tell the breeder whether you want a family companion or a show prospect, and ask how they get puppies used to grooming. Health tests to ask about

The RKC lists a DNA test for progressive retinal atrophy (PRA4) at Good Practice level for the Lhasa Apso. Good Practice covers the tests the RKC treats as most critical, as a starting point for breeders. PRA is an inherited degeneration of the retina: sight fades over time until the dog is blind, and there is no treatment. PRA4 is autosomal recessive, so a puppy is affected only if it inherits the mutation from both parents. Carriers show no signs but can pass the mutation on. The RKC offers a Lhasa Apso DNA package covering PRA4, and results for registered dogs appear on its Health Test Results Finder.

At Best Practice level the RKC adds an eye examination under the BVA/RKC/ISDS Eye Scheme, recommended within the 12 months before mating. The Lhasa Apso is on the BVA's 2026 list of breeds with a known inherited eye disease, for PRA.

NOELAC's health page also covers kidney (renal) dysplasia, patellar luxation and dry eye (keratoconjunctivitis sicca) in the breed. None of these has an RKC Good or Best Practice test for the Lhasa Apso. The breed is in Breed Watch Category 1, meaning the RKC has not identified visible health concerns linked to its conformation. Health testing reduces risk but cannot guarantee a healthy puppy.
