Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Buying a Pekingese puppy

Searching for Pekingese puppies for sale? The Peke is a small, heavy-boned companion with a long coat that needs daily care and a flat face that calls for a breeder who takes breathing seriously. Breeders listed on caninebreeder.co.uk show their name, website, social media, location and categories, so you can draw up a shortlist and contact kennels directly. Before you commit, ask for Respiratory Function Grading results on both parents, watch the parents move and listen to their breathing, and see the puppies with their mother. In England, licensed breeders may not sell a puppy under eight weeks old. The RKC notes that the breed's popularity has declined, so you may need to wait for a litter. Health tests to ask about

On its breed page the RKC lists prioritising genetic diversity as Good Practice for the Pekingese, and an eye examination under the BVA/RKC/ISDS Eye Scheme as Best Practice. In August 2026 it recognised breathing assessment for brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) under its Respiratory Function Grading Scheme. The August 2026 RKC Health Standard already lists this alongside eye testing at Best Practice, and the breed page says it will apply formally, including on Find a Puppy, from January 2027, so breeders should have their dogs graded before then.

Under the scheme, a trained vet listens to the dog's breathing at rest and again after three minutes of brisk exercise, then gives a grade from 0 to 3. Dogs can be graded from 12 months and should be reassessed every two years; the RKC does not recommend breeding from a Grade 3 dog.

The Pekingese is in Breed Watch Category 3. Judges are asked to look for signs of breathing difficulty, an excessively profuse coat, protruding eyes, a heavy overnose wrinkle, pinched nostrils, poor muscle tone, visible eye irritation, and incorrect hind conformation or poor rear movement. The RKC also warns that flat-faced dogs are at risk of eye ulcers and skin fold infections. Testing lowers risk but cannot guarantee a healthy puppy.
