Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Using a Pekingese stud dog

Pekingese stud dogs on this page are listed by their owners. Before agreeing a mating, ask for his current Respiratory Function Grading Scheme result. Grades expire, so the RKC recommends a fresh assessment every two years. It advises that ideally both dogs in a mating have been through the scheme, and it does not recommend breeding from a Grade 3 dog. Ask when he was last examined under the BVA/RKC/ISDS Eye Scheme, and check both results on the RKC Health Test Results Finder. Look at him against the Breed Watch points of concern: open nostrils, no heavy overnose wrinkle, clear and comfortable eyes, sound rear movement and a coat that does not hamper him. Confirm his registration with The Royal Kennel Club and check the pairing on the RKC's Mate Select inbreeding coefficient calculator. Agree the stud fee and terms in writing. Health tests for a Pekingese stud

On its breed page the RKC lists prioritising genetic diversity as Good Practice for the Pekingese, and an eye examination under the BVA/RKC/ISDS Eye Scheme as Best Practice. In August 2026 it recognised breathing assessment for brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) under its Respiratory Function Grading Scheme. The August 2026 RKC Health Standard already lists this alongside eye testing at Best Practice, and the breed page says it will apply formally, including on Find a Puppy, from January 2027, so breeders should have their dogs graded before then.

Under the scheme, a trained vet listens to the dog's breathing at rest and again after three minutes of brisk exercise, then gives a grade from 0 to 3. Dogs can be graded from 12 months and should be reassessed every two years; the RKC does not recommend breeding from a Grade 3 dog.

The Pekingese is in Breed Watch Category 3. Judges are asked to look for signs of breathing difficulty, an excessively profuse coat, protruding eyes, a heavy overnose wrinkle, pinched nostrils, poor muscle tone, visible eye irritation, and incorrect hind conformation or poor rear movement. The RKC also warns that flat-faced dogs are at risk of eye ulcers and skin fold infections. Testing lowers risk but cannot guarantee a healthy puppy.
