Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Buying a Pomapoo puppy

Pomapoo puppies come from a Pomeranian and a Toy Poodle, or from Pomapoo parents, and they are tiny. The Pomeranian standard gives an ideal adult weight of 1.8 to 2.5 kg, and a Toy Poodle stands under 28 cm. The parents are your best guide to a puppy's likely size, coat and temperament, so meet them if you can, and remember that littermates can differ. Ask for each parent's health results, especially the Toy Poodle's prcd-PRA DNA test and eye certificates, and check any registered dog on the RKC Health Test Results Finder. Be cautious of adverts that promise a non-shedding or allergy-free coat, because a crossbreed's coat cannot be guaranteed. All puppies must be microchipped and registered by eight weeks old. A Pomapoo cannot enter breed shows, but it can join the RKC Activity Register for agility, obedience and similar events.

Health tests to ask about

The RKC sets no health tests for the Pomapoo itself, so screening should follow what it recommends for each parent breed. For the Toy Poodle, Good Practice is a DNA test for progressive retinal atrophy (prcd-PRA), an inherited disease in which the retina degenerates. Affected dogs lose their night vision first and later go completely blind, with signs usually appearing from about three years old. Best Practice for the Toy Poodle adds an eye examination and hip scoring. For the Pomeranian, the RKC lists an eye examination under the BVA/KC/ISDS scheme as Best Practice.

prcd-PRA is autosomal recessive, so a puppy can be affected only if it inherits the faulty gene from both parents. In a first cross, a Toy Poodle parent that tests clear cannot pass it on. If the Poodle is a carrier, puppies may inherit one copy, and where both parents are Pomapoos, both should be tested. The BVA eye and hip schemes accept crossbreeds, so a Pomapoo kept for breeding can be screened in its own right.

Breed Watch covers pedigree show dogs, not crossbreeds, but it flags useful points. The Pomeranian is in Category 2, and judges check that the fontanelle, the soft spot on the skull, has fully closed in dogs over 12 months. The Toy Poodle is in Category 1.
