Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Using a Cockapoo stud dog

If you offer a Cockapoo stud dog, or a Cocker Spaniel or Miniature Poodle stud for Cockapoo litters, bitch owners will expect to see his DNA results for prcd-PRA and the other conditions the RKC lists for his breed. Add a BVA/KC/ISDS eye certificate from the 12 months before mating and, ideally, a BVA/KC hip score; the hip scheme accepts dogs from one year old. A pure-bred stud should be RKC registered so his results appear on the Health Test Results Finder and his own inbreeding coefficient can be looked up with the RKC calculators, which draw on RKC pedigree records. A crossbred stud has no RKC pedigree, so keep written records of his ancestry to help owners avoid related pairings. The Cockapoo Club of GB asks members to keep a mating's predicted COI below 6.25%. Agree the fee and terms in writing.

Health tests for a Cockapoo stud

The RKC does not publish a health test list for the Cockapoo, because it is not a recognised breed. The sensible approach is to test each parent for the conditions the RKC recommends for its own breed. The BVA canine health schemes accept crossbred as well as pedigree dogs, and the eye scheme does not require RKC registration.

Progressive retinal atrophy (prcd-PRA) appears on the lists for both the Cocker Spaniel and the Miniature Poodle. It is recessive, so a puppy is affected only if it inherits the faulty gene from both parents, which is why both parents should be DNA tested. AMS, FN and AON are listed for the Cocker, and OC for the Poodle. These still matter: in F1b, F2 and later generations both parents can have Cocker or Poodle ancestry, and so can carry the same variants. The Cockapoo Club of GB sets a minimum health testing standard before it will register a litter. Both parent breeds are in Breed Watch Category 1, with no breed-specific points of concern. Testing lowers the risk of inherited disease but cannot guarantee a healthy puppy.
