Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Using a Hungarian Mudi stud dog

If you own a Hungarian Mudi stud dog, bitch owners will want to see his RKC registration and pedigree before anything else. The RKC has no recommended pre-breeding screening or breed-specific DNA package for the Mudi at present, so be open about any health checks you have chosen to carry out and share the results. With a breed so recently added to the Imported Breed Register, one popular sire can have a large effect on a small population, so run each proposed pairing through the RKC inbreeding coefficient calculator and keep the predicted COI as low as possible; the calculator may show the breed average as N/A for a newly recognised breed. The standard rules out aggressive or overly shy behaviour, so temperament in the stud's relatives matters as much as his looks. Health tests for a Hungarian Mudi stud

The RKC does not currently recommend any pre-breeding health screening for the Hungarian Mudi, and advises breeders and buyers to check the breed page often, as this may change when new evidence and research become available. There is no RKC breed-specific DNA testing package for the Mudi, although individual DNA tests can be ordered through the RKC. The lack of recommended tests is not a statement that the breed is free of health problems, so it is fair to ask a breeder which checks they have chosen to carry out and why. Separately, the RKC encourages routine eye testing under the BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme for dogs of any breed, and the scheme is open to all dogs; abnormalities found are collated into an annual sightings report that the scheme's Eye Panel Working Party reviews.

The Mudi only joined the Imported Breed Register in July 2025, so genetic diversity deserves attention. The RKC inbreeding coefficient calculator shows the predicted COI for a mating between registered dogs, although for some newly recognised breeds the breed average is shown as N/A. The Mudi is in Breed Watch Category 1, meaning no breed-specific points of concern have been flagged for show judges. The RKC says it will develop its new breeding for health framework to apply to each breed.
