Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Using a Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla stud dog

Before booking, ask for the dog's HUU DNA result: the HWVA code says affected stock should only be mated to clear stock, and its buyer guide asks for at least one clear parent in every litter. Check his hip score and elbow grade on the RKC Health Test Results Finder; the RKC hip scheme guidance suggests choosing breeding stock scored around or below the breed median. Run the proposed pairing through the RKC Inbreeding Coefficient (COI) lookup and aim for a COI at or below the breed average. Both dogs should be RKC registered so the litter can be registered. The HWVA code says a stud should not be used before 18 months of age or serve bitches under two. Ask about allergies and epilepsy among the stud's relatives as well. Health tests for a Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla stud

The RKC's health guidance for the Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla has two tiers. Its Good Practice tier is a DNA test for hyperuricosuria (HUU), an inherited disorder in which uric acid does not dissolve well in the urine and can form crystals and stones in the urinary tract. The RKC says signs usually appear between three and six years of age, and a urinary tract fully blocked by stones is an emergency. The condition is autosomal recessive, and the HWVA notes that if at least one parent is clear, no puppy will be affected. The Best Practice tier adds hip scoring and elbow grading under the BVA hip and elbow schemes, for dogs aged one year or over. The RKC expects responsible breeders to complete the Best Practice tests as well as the Good Practice one.

The HWVA's health pages also cover allergies and epilepsy, and record single reported cases of Vizsla inflammatory polymyopathy and canine epileptoid cramping syndrome in the breed. The breed is in Breed Watch Category 1, with no breed-specific points of concern flagged for judges, and has no extra breed-specific breeding restrictions.
