Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

With so few Komondors registered in the UK, choosing a stud dog is largely about protecting genetic diversity, the one Good Practice item the RKC lists for the breed. Run any proposed pairing through the RKC inbreeding coefficient calculator, which works out the expected coefficient of inbreeding for puppies from two registered dogs, and aim for a figure at or below the breed's annual average and as low as you can manage. The RKC's genetic diversity guidance also warns against overusing popular sires. The stud should be RKC registered so the litter can be registered, and should have a sound, steady temperament. The RKC lists no DNA tests for the Komondor, but a BVA/KC hip score and a current eye certificate give bitch owners useful extra information; confirm results on the RKC Health Test Results Finder and agree fees and terms in writing. Breed Watch places the Komondor in Category 1, meaning the RKC has not identified visible, conformation-related health concerns for show judges to watch in this breed. That relates to how the dog is built; it says nothing about inherited disease in individual dogs.

Under the RKC Health Standard, the only Good Practice item for the Komondor is prioritising genetic diversity, and the RKC does not offer a breed-specific DNA testing package. Very few Komondors are registered in the UK, so checking the coefficient of inbreeding of every planned mating matters.

The Komondor Club of America reports some hip dysplasia in the breed and notes that entropion and juvenile cataracts have been recorded. It says bloat can occur, and that Komondors are usually very sensitive to anaesthetics, which is worth mentioning to your vet. Its code of ethics requires hip and eye checks before breeding. In the UK the comparable screening is the BVA/KC Hip Dysplasia Scheme (dogs must be at least one year old) and the BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme, both open to all breeds. Neither is listed by the RKC for the Komondor, but both are reasonable to ask about.
