Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

The RKC recognised a DNA test for PRA(rcd4) in May 2026 and will include it in the breed's Best Practice guidelines from December 2026, so ask whether he has been tested; the RKC advises that a carrier should only be mated to a clear dog. Genetic diversity is the RKC's Good Practice priority for this breed, so run the pairing through the RKC's inbreeding coefficient calculator, previously part of the Kennel Club's Mate Select service, and aim at or below the breed average. Health tests for a Polish Lowland Sheepdog stud

The RKC sorts pre-breeding health checks into Good Practice, the minimum it strongly recommends, and Best Practice, which responsible breeders should complete as well. For the Polish Lowland Sheepdog, Good Practice is prioritising genetic diversity: the RKC advises aiming for litters with a coefficient of inbreeding at or below the annual breed average, and avoiding heavy use of popular sires. Best Practice adds an eye examination and hip scoring. Under the BVA hip scheme a dog must be at least one year old when X-rayed, and the total score runs from 0 to 106, with lower scores better.

In May 2026 the RKC recognised a DNA test for PRA(rcd4), which will form part of the breed's Best Practice guidelines from December 2026. This late-onset form of progressive retinal atrophy makes the retina in both eyes degenerate, causing gradual loss of sight. It is autosomal recessive: only dogs with two copies of the mutation are affected, while carriers show no signs but can pass it on.

The RKC offers no breed-specific DNA package, though individual tests exist, and the breed is not on the BVA's January 2026 list of breeds with known inherited eye disease. Results can be looked up on the RKC Health Test Results Finder. Testing lowers risk but cannot guarantee a healthy puppy.
