Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Using a Samoyed stud dog

A Samoyed stud dog should be RKC registered and hold results for all five tests the RKC lists at best practice: DNA results for XLHN and XL-PRA, a BVA/KC hip score, an elbow grade and a certificate under the BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme. Both DNA tests concern X-linked conditions, and the RKC advises that only dogs tested clear should be mated, so the bitch's status matters as much as the dog's; swap results before agreeing anything. Run the proposed pairing through the RKC's inbreeding coefficient calculator and aim for a figure at or below the breed average, ideally as low as possible. The BVA advises using only dogs whose hip scores sit under or near the breed median and whose elbows are graded 0. Health tests for a Samoyed stud

The RKC lists five tests at best practice level for the Samoyed: two DNA tests and three British Veterinary Association (BVA) screening schemes.

Both DNA tests concern X-linked conditions. X-linked hereditary nephritis (XLHN) is an inherited kidney disease that, in males and some females, progresses to kidney failure. X-linked progressive retinal atrophy (XL-PRA) makes the light-sensitive cells of the retina break down, so sight worsens and can be lost completely. A male's only X chromosome always comes from his mother, so the dam's result matters as much as the sire's. For both conditions the RKC advises mating only dogs that have tested clear.

For hip and elbow screening, X-rays are taken once the dog is at least a year old and assessed by the BVA's panel of scrutineers. Hip scores run from 0 to 106 and elbow grades from 0 to 3; lower is better. The BVA recommends breeding only from dogs whose hip scores are under, or near, the published breed median, and from dogs with elbow grade 0. The eye scheme is a clinical examination by a panel ophthalmologist. Results for RKC-registered dogs appear on the RKC Health Test Results Finder.
