Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Using a Sproodle stud dog

Sproodle litters can be sired by an English Springer Spaniel, a Miniature Poodle or a Sproodle. For a Springer stud, ask for the RKC's Good Practice results (a BVA/KC hip score, an elbow grade and an eye certificate with gonioscopy) and DNA results for PRA (cord1), fucosidosis, PFK, AMS and DAMS. A Poodle stud should have prcd-PRA and OC DNA results and eye and hip screening. If the stud is RKC registered, confirm his results on the Health Test Results Finder and compare his own coefficient of inbreeding with the breed average using the RKC's inbreeding calculators. The RKC holds no pedigree data for crossbreeds, so for Sproodle-to-Sproodle matings keep your own records and avoid related dogs. The RKC also warns that a stud much larger than the bitch can cause mating and whelping problems, which is worth weighing when pairing a Springer dog with a Miniature Poodle bitch.

Health tests for a Sproodle stud

Health checks for a Sproodle come from the tests the RKC lists for the English Springer Spaniel and the Miniature Poodle. The RKC advises anyone breeding a crossbreed to consider running the full set of tests for both breeds, because with complex conditions such as hip and elbow dysplasia the same faulty genes can be involved in different breeds.

For the Springer, the RKC's Good Practice list covers prioritising genetic diversity, hip scoring, elbow grading and an eye examination with gonioscopy, which checks the eye's drainage angle for an abnormality (PLA) linked to glaucoma. Best Practice adds five DNA tests: PRA (cord1), fucosidosis, PFK deficiency, acral mutilation syndrome and DAMS. The RKC lists no Good Practice tests for the Miniature Poodle; its Best Practice list is DNA tests for prcd-PRA and osteochondrodysplasia (OC), plus eye and hip screening.

The RKC describes each of these DNA conditions as recessive, so a puppy is affected only if it receives a faulty copy from each parent. Running the full set on both parents matters most for F1b and F2 litters, where both parents share ancestry from the same breed. The BVA hip and elbow schemes need the dog to be at least a year old, and the BVA Eye Scheme is open to crossbreeds.
