Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Using a Standard Poodle stud dog

A Standard Poodle stud dog needs more paperwork than most. The RKC lists DNA tests for prcd-PRA, PRA (rcd4) and vWD1 alongside the BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme and the BVA/KC Hip Dysplasia Scheme, so a stud owner should be ready to share all five results. If the sire lives overseas, the RKC will only register the litter if he is proven clear or a carrier of both PRA types, or hereditarily clear, and a carrier should only be mated to a bitch that is clear of both. The Standard Poodle Club also expects breeding dogs to be tested for sebaceous adenitis. Confirm the stud is RKC registered, check the pairing with the RKC inbreeding coefficient calculator against the breed average (the club's code of ethics advises keeping the figure in single figures), and agree the fee and repeat-mating terms in writing. Health tests for a Standard Poodle stud

The RKC lists five tests for Standard Poodle breeding stock, all under its Best Practice heading. Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) makes the cells of the retina degenerate, usually starting with night blindness and leading to loss of sight. Both prcd-PRA and PRA (rcd4) are autosomal recessive, so a puppy is only affected if it inherits a faulty copy of the gene from each parent. Von Willebrand disease type 1 is an inherited bleeding disorder caused by a shortage or fault in a clotting protein. Since 6 January 2025, the RKC will only register imported Standard Poodles and litters by overseas sires if the dog is proven clear or a carrier of both prcd-PRA and PRA (rcd4), or is hereditarily clear, and identified carriers may only be mated to a Standard Poodle that is clear of both. The RKC introduced this rule at the breed clubs' request.

Outside the RKC lists, the Standard Poodle Club says its code of ethics requires members to test for sebaceous adenitis (SA), an inflammatory skin disease confirmed by skin biopsy, before breeding. The club also keeps open registers for SA and Addison's disease. The Poodle Council's list of known Standard Poodle health issues includes bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus), epilepsy and neonatal encephalopathy with seizures (NeWS).
