Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Using a Wire Haired Dachshund stud dog

The RKC sorts pairings of known IVDD grades into green, amber and red risk bands and says a red mating should never knowingly be made. Check that the dog is registered with The Royal Kennel Club, and remember the RKC will not register puppies when both parents are dapple. Work out the coefficient of inbreeding for the pairing with the RKC's online inbreeding calculator and aim for a figure at or below the breed average. Dachshund Health UK notes that some Wires carry recessive smooth or long coat genes, which can show up in litters. Agree the fee and terms in writing.

Health tests for a Wire Haired Dachshund stud

The Royal Kennel Club's health guidance for the Wire Haired Dachshund puts the spine first. Its Good Practice tier, the minimum it strongly recommends before breeding, is the KC/Dachshund Health UK IVDD scheme. Dogs are X-rayed once, between 24 and 48 months of age, and the number of calcified discs sets a grade from 0 to 3 that stands for life. Dachshund Health UK describes intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) as the most frequent health problem affecting Dachshunds in the UK. In the 2018 DachsLife survey quoted by the RKC, 8.6% of Wire Haired Dachshunds over three had been reported with IVDD, the lowest figure of the six varieties. The RKC's Best Practice tier adds eye examination under the BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme. Dachshund Health UK also recommends NPHP4 PRA (day blindness) screening before breeding for Wires with Scandinavian pedigrees; this is not an RKC listing.

The breed is in Breed Watch Category 2: judges watch for visible eye irritation or discomfort, inadequate ground clearance, and incorrect hind conformation or poor rear movement. The RKC will not register puppies from a mating made on or after 1 January 2010 in which both parents are dapple, because of the risks to sight and hearing.
