Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

The Bouvier des Flandres is in Breed Watch Category 1, the category the RKC uses for breeds with no visible health concerns linked to conformation. The RKC says there are currently no additional breed-specific breeding restrictions for the Bouvier.

The RKC's good-practice advice for the breed is to prioritise genetic diversity, which matters in a breed the breed club describes as numerically small in the UK. Its best-practice list covers hips, elbows and eyes. Dogs must be at least a year old for hip scoring and elbow grading; the BVA recommends breeding only from dogs with an elbow grade of 0, and choosing dogs whose hip scores are below or close to the breed median.

The Bouvier des Flandres Club of Great Britain reports very few recorded health concerns in Bouviers bred in the UK, but describes conditions seen in the breed, including bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus), hip and elbow dysplasia, cataract, glaucoma, hypothyroidism and subaortic stenosis. Its health page also discusses heart scanning by echocardiogram and thyroid blood tests.
