Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Buying a Cesky Terrier puppy

Cesky Terrier puppies are rarely available at short notice. The Cesky Terrier Club says only a few are born in the UK each year and breeders usually hold waiting lists, so be ready to register interest and wait for a planned litter. Litters on this page are advertised by breeders themselves.

Before paying anything, ask how the breeder chose the pairing to protect genetic diversity, which health tests the parents have had, and whether the puppy has started getting used to grooming and clipping. Health tests to ask about

The RKC does not list any breed-specific screening schemes for the Cesky Terrier and does not currently offer a breed DNA test package, although individual DNA tests are available. Its Good Practice recommendation for the breed is to prioritise genetic diversity, which is one of the three strands of the RKC's Breeding for Health framework, alongside conformation and breed-related disease. That matters in a breed this small: the Cesky Terrier Club's health page reports that 17 puppies were registered in 2025 and 20 in 2024.

The club's breed health coordinator points breeders to the RKC's health guidance, encourages them to aim for Best Practice and asks owners to report health problems, eye test results and causes of death so the breed's health can be tracked. The BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme is open to all dogs, so ask a breeder which checks they have chosen and why. Results for registered dogs appear on the Health Test Results Finder.
