Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Buying an Irish Wolfhound puppy

Irish Wolfhound puppies are scarce: 197 were registered with the RKC in 2025, and the breed is on its list of vulnerable native breeds. The Health Group points out that litter sizes are unpredictable and that many breeders keep waiting lists, so start talking to breeders well before you hope to bring a puppy home. When you enquire about a litter listed here, ask for the parents' heart screening certificates and the puppy's liver shunt result, both of which the breed clubs expect. Plan for space as well as time: the RKC suggests a large house and garden and more than two hours' exercise a day for an adult. A growing puppy needs its own exercise and feeding plan, which the breeder should give you in writing. Health tests to ask about

For the Irish Wolfhound, the RKC's pre-breeding screening lists prioritising genetic diversity as Good Practice and eye examination under the BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme as Best Practice, and notes that the breed has its own breed club health scheme. The RKC points to the Irish Wolfhound Health Group for that scheme; the Irish Wolfhound Club says the Group was set up in 2004 with representatives of the four UK breed clubs and is now independent. The Group runs a subsidised heart screening scheme that any Wolfhound owner can use each year, and its liver shunt page explains that breeders usually test puppies with a bile acid test at six to eight weeks, before they go home. The Irish Wolfhound Club requires its members to heart test parents before breeding and to test puppies for portosystemic shunt.

The Group's A to Z of health information covers conditions including heart disease (dilated cardiomyopathy and atrial fibrillation), bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus), osteosarcoma, pneumonia and primary ciliary dyskinesia, which is often called rhinitis in the breed. The Irish Wolfhound is in Breed Watch Category 2, with misplaced canine teeth listed as the point of concern for judges.
