Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Using a Pyrenean Mastiff stud dog

The RKC's advice on finding a suitable mate recommends meeting a stud dog in person to judge his temperament. Health tests for a Pyrenean Mastiff stud

The RKC Pyrenean Mastiff page currently lists no Good Practice or Best Practice pre-breeding health screening for the breed, and no breed-specific breeding restrictions. There is no RKC DNA testing package for the breed, although individual DNA tests are available. The breed is in Breed Watch Category 1, meaning no visible concerns linked to conformation have been flagged for show judges beyond the breed standard itself. The RKC is moving its breed health work into a new breeding for health framework covering genetic diversity, conformation and breed-related disease, so check the breed page from time to time for changes.

No listed screening is not the same as a clean bill of health. The BVA hip and elbow dysplasia schemes screen dogs of all breeds, so ask whether the parents have been hip scored or elbow graded, and look up any recorded results on the RKC Health Test Results Finder. With the breed still on the Imported Breed Register, also ask for the coefficient of inbreeding of the mating and where the parents' bloodlines were imported from.
