Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Using a Swedish Lapphund stud dog

For a Swedish Lapphund stud dog, the RKC's Good Practice point is prioritising genetic diversity, so how related he is to the bitch matters as much as his looks. Before agreeing a mating, check the pairing on the RKC's inbreeding coefficient calculator (the Kennel Club announced COI checks for proposed matings through its Mate Select service in 2011) and aim at or below the breed average. The RKC warns that it may hold only a three-generation pedigree for an imported dog, so check how many generations a figure is based on. It also advises stud dog owners to limit how many times one dog is used. Share his RKC registration details and any voluntary health results, such as eye or hip examinations, with bitch owners. Except in rare cases with a proven welfare reason, the RKC will not register puppies from father and daughter, mother and son, or brother and sister matings.

Health tests for a Swedish Lapphund stud

The RKC's only Good Practice item for the Swedish Lapphund is prioritising genetic diversity, and it does not currently offer a breed-specific DNA test package. That puts the emphasis on how closely related the parents are. The RKC's genetic diversity guidance asks breeders to aim for puppies with a coefficient of inbreeding at or below the breed's annual average, and asks stud dog owners to limit how often a dog is used.

On Breed Watch, the RKC places the breed in Category 1, for breeds whose conformation raises no visible health concerns. Judges have no breed-specific points of concern beyond those routinely covered by the standard.

The breed information on the Lapinkoira Association of Great Britain site, supplied by the Lapphund Club of Finland, names epilepsy, hip dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) among conditions found in some breeding stock and encourages breeders to examine their dogs regularly. The RKC does not list tests for these conditions for the breed, but the BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme is open to all dogs and the BVA also runs a hip scheme, so it is reasonable to ask a breeder whether they have used either.
