Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Health tests to ask about

The Royal Kennel Club's Braque d'Auvergne page lists prioritising genetic diversity as good practice and hip screening under the BVA/KC Hip Dysplasia Scheme as best practice. It lists no breed-specific DNA test package. The breed is in Breed Watch Category 1, so no breed-specific points of concern have been flagged for judges, and the RKC gives a lifespan of over ten years.

The Braque d'Auvergne Association UK describes the breed as predominantly healthy but reports some cases of hip dysplasia, and says every dog should at least be hip scored before breeding; it also advises elbow scoring. Some cases of cherry eye have been seen, and the association recommends a BVA eye test before breeding if there are any concerns about a dog's eyes. It also advises DNA testing breeding dogs for the E-locus (orange) and B-locus (brown) colour genes, with carriers mated only to clear dogs.
