Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Buying a Miniature Xoloitzcuintle (Mexican Hairless) puppy

Miniature Xoloitzcuintle puppies grow into dogs of 25–35 cm under the RKC standard, the smallest of the three UK sizes, and the RKC considers the breed suitable for a flat. The Xoloitzcuintli Club of America warns that it can take several months to find a Xolo puppy, so contact breeders early. Newborn Xolos look quite unlike adults, with shorter faces, wrinkled skin and dropped ears, the same club explains. Ask whether the puppy offered is hairless or coated, see it with its mother, and check both parents' hip and eye results before paying anything. The puppy should be microchipped and registered by eight weeks old, and the breeder should explain how RKC registration works for a breed on the Imported Breed Register. Treat any advert as a starting point and verify health claims yourself.

Health tests to ask about

The Miniature is in Breed Watch Category 1: the RKC has not flagged any breed-specific points of concern for show judges beyond those the standard already covers. Breed Watch looks at visible conformation, so it is not a statement that the breed is free of inherited disease.

For breeding dogs, the RKC's Good Practice level is prioritising genetic diversity, and its Best Practice level adds two screening schemes, hips and eyes. Unlike the Intermediate, the Miniature does not have elbow screening on its RKC list. Hip X-rays require the dog to be at least 12 months old and microchipped; the BVA scores each hip and adds the two together for a total between 0 and 106, where lower means less sign of dysplasia. Eye examinations are carried out by BVA-appointed ophthalmologists, and results for RKC-registered dogs appear on the Health Test Results Finder. There is no breed-specific RKC DNA package for the Miniature at present.

Some dental differences are expected in hairless dogs: the standard does not penalise a few missing or rotated teeth, and the Xoloitzcuintli Club of America says hairless Xolos often have an incomplete set of teeth.
