Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Buying a Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer puppy

Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer puppies are uncommon in Britain: the RKC recorded 21 registrations in 2024 and 16 in 2025. Because the breed is on the Imported Breed Register, puppies are registered there rather than on the main Breed Register. Before you commit, consider whether you can meet the needs of a large working gundog with a harsh, bearded coat, bred to hunt, point and retrieve. The breed club lists member breeders and can put you in touch with an experienced owner if you would like to talk the breed through first. When viewing a litter, ask to see the mother with her puppies, both parents' hip scores and the registration paperwork, and check whether any endorsements apply. Health tests to ask about

The RKC places the Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer in Breed Watch Category 1, meaning no breed-specific points of concern have been identified for judges beyond the breed standard. There is no breed-specific RKC DNA testing package, and the RKC strongly recommends that breeders prioritise genetic diversity before breeding. That matters in a breed that recorded 16 RKC registrations in 2025 and that was built up in the UK from a small group of imported dogs.

The breed club strongly recommends hip scoring under the BVA/KC Hip Dysplasia Scheme before breeding. It also encourages breeders to use the RKC endorsement that makes a puppy's future offspring ineligible for registration, so hips, conformation and temperament can be assessed before a young dog is bred from. The BVA scheme requires the dog to be at least a year old and microchipped, and the BVA advises breeding only from dogs with scores below or close to the breed median. The club's health page notes a small number of reported cases of idiopathic epilepsy, and it runs general health, skin and coat, and longevity surveys that owners can complete.
