Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Buying a Yakutian Laika puppy

This page lists Yakutian Laika puppies for sale from UK breeders. The breed was added to the RKC's Imported Breed Register on 1 July 2026, so you may need to wait, or travel, for the right litter. Before you enquire, be honest about the workload: the RKC's profile suggests more than two hours of exercise every day, a large house and garden and a country setting, and the dense coat needs weekly brushing and sheds.

When you contact a breeder, ask for both parents' RKC registration details, the inbreeding coefficient of the mating and any health screening results. Meet the puppies with their mother, and do not hand over a deposit until you have seen the paperwork and a written contract. Listings are written by the breeders themselves, so the checks are yours to make.

Health tests to ask about

The Yakutian Laika joined the RKC register only in July 2026, and the RKC currently lists no breed-specific DNA tests or BVA/KC screening schemes for it. Its single good-practice recommendation before breeding is prioritising genetic diversity, which matters for a UK population founded on imported dogs.

In practice, that means checking any planned mating with the RKC's inbreeding coefficient (CoI) calculators. The RKC's general advice is to aim for puppies at or below the breed average, ideally as low as possible, and to avoid heavy use of popular sires. Two caveats apply to a new, imported breed. The RKC says the breed average can show as N/A for some newly recognised breeds, and that imported dogs may have only a three-generation pedigree on its records, which makes a CoI less informative, so check how many generations each calculation uses.

The RKC has no breed-specific DNA test package for the Yakutian Laika, though individual DNA tests can be ordered through its testing service. Any extra screening a breeder chooses is their own decision rather than an RKC recommendation, and a CoI is a measure of risk, not a promise of health.
