Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Health tests for an Irish Red & White Setter stud

The RKC Irish Red & White Setter page sets out the breed's health advice. As good practice, breeders should prioritise genetic diversity, which matters in a vulnerable breed. Best practice adds a DNA test for canine leucocyte adhesion deficiency (CLAD), eye testing under the BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme and hip scoring under the BVA/KC Hip Dysplasia Scheme. The RKC offers a breed DNA testing package covering CLAD. The breed is in Breed Watch Category 1.

CLAD is an autosomal recessive condition in which white blood cells cannot fight infection properly, and affected puppies usually die young. The RKC says imported dogs must be tested to stop it being reintroduced to the UK population. From 6 January 2025, imported dogs, and litters by overseas sires, can only be RKC registered if the dog or sire is DNA tested clear or carrier, or is hereditary clear; carriers may only be mated to a clear or hereditary clear partner. The RKC publishes a list of CLAD-tested dogs.

The breed club's health page gives a breed average hip score of 10 (scores run from 0 to 106, lower is better). It treats posterior polar cataract as a minor condition that need not stop a dog being bred, but says breeding dogs should be eye tested so two affected dogs are not mated.
