Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Using a Portuguese Pointer stud dog

Portuguese Pointer stud dogs on this page are advertised by their owners. Before agreeing a mating, check that the dog is registered with the RKC on the Imported Breed Register and that nothing on his record would stop the litter from being registered. Genetic diversity is the RKC's Good Practice priority for this breed, so run the pairing through the RKC's inbreeding coefficient calculator, compare the result with the breed average and aim as low as you can. Imported dogs may have short pedigrees on the RKC database, so check how many generations the figure is based on. Ask whether he has any health screening or DNA test results and look them up on the RKC Health Test Results Finder. Ask about his temperament and working ability too, and agree the stud fee and terms in writing.

Health tests for a Portuguese Pointer stud

The RKC's health information for the Portuguese Pointer (Imp) names one Good Practice priority for breeders: prioritising genetic diversity. It lists no breed-specific screening schemes or Best Practice tests, and there is no RKC breed-specific DNA testing package for it at present, although individual DNA tests can be bought. There are no additional breed-specific breeding restrictions.

In practice, genetic diversity means checking the inbreeding coefficient (CoI) of each planned mating with the RKC's calculators. The RKC's advice is to aim for a litter CoI no higher than the breed average, and lower where possible. It also warns that it may hold only three generations of pedigree for imported dogs, so check how many generations a calculation used before relying on it.

The BVA hip and eye schemes accept dogs of any breed, but the RKC does not list either for the Portuguese Pointer, and the breed is not on the BVA's January 2026 list of breeds with known inherited eye disease. The breed is in Breed Watch Category 1, meaning no breed-specific points of concern have been flagged for show judges. Health testing lowers risk; it cannot guarantee a healthy puppy.
