Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Buying a Chorkie puppy

When you browse Chorkie puppies for sale, look for adverts that name both parents, say which is the Chihuahua and which the Yorkshire Terrier, and give their weights and ages. The Chorkie is a crossbreed, so the RKC can record it on its Activity Register rather than its Breed Register; that lets owners enter agility, obedience and other RKC licensed activities, though not breed shows. A useful advert will list the Chihuahua parent's eye examination and, now that BOAS grading is recognised for the Chihuahua, its RFG grade. Puppies should be at least eight weeks old when they leave, microchipped and recorded on a database, and a licensed breeder in England must show the licence number. If a puppy is merle, ask whether both parents were merle. Be cautious of adverts promising a "teacup" or "micro" size, and see the puppies with their mother before you pay anything.

Health tests to ask about

The Chorkie has no health recommendations of its own, so breeders should follow those for each parent breed. For the Chihuahua (Smooth Coat), the RKC's best-practice tests are an eye examination under the BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme and, recognised in August 2026, a breathing assessment for brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) under the Respiratory Function Grading scheme run with the University of Cambridge. The RKC says the breathing test joins its Health Standard from January 2027, and the Chihuahua (Long Coat) has the same two tests. RFG grading is offered only for a named list of breeds that includes the Chihuahua but not the Yorkshire Terrier, so it is the Chihuahua parent that should be graded. For the Yorkshire Terrier, the RKC currently lists no pre-breeding screening.

Both Chihuahua varieties are in Breed Watch Category 2, and judges are asked to watch for faulty bites and teeth, wry jaw and an excessively short muzzle. The RKC does not register merle Chihuahuas and warns that dogs inheriting two copies of the merle gene face a higher risk of eye and ear problems. It also cautions against "teacup" breeding from the very smallest dogs.
