Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Health and screening

The RKC places the Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen in Breed Watch Category 1, meaning no points of concern specific to the breed have been flagged for special attention by judges. The only pre-breeding measure the RKC lists for the Grand is prioritising genetic diversity: it advises using the inbreeding coefficient calculator and aiming for puppies at or below the breed average, ideally as low as possible. The RKC has no DNA testing package specific to the Grand.

The Basset Griffon Vendéen Club's health pages cover both breeds. It names cataracts, persistent pupillary membranes and lens luxation among eye problems seen in BGVs (its POAG DNA-testing work concerns the Petit), and also monitors hypothyroidism, Cushing's disease, pancreatitis and steroid-responsive meningitis. Craniomandibular osteopathy, an abnormal growth of bone in the skull and lower jaw that usually shows between four and eight months of age, has been reported mainly in Grand puppies. The club also asks owners of BGVs diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy to submit DNA samples for research.

Separately from the RKC listing, the BVA advises anyone planning to breed to have both parents' eyes clinically examined. No breeder can guarantee a puppy's future health.
