Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Buying a Hamiltonstovare puppy

Hamiltonstovare puppies are listed here by their breeders, and because litters are uncommon in Britain there can be long gaps between adverts. Before you reserve a puppy, confirm that the litter will be registered with the RKC, ask for the coefficient of inbreeding of the mating and arrange to see the puppies with their mother. Health tests to ask about

For the Hamiltonstovare, the RKC's pre-breeding list includes no DNA tests or screening schemes, and there is no breed-specific DNA testing package, although individual DNA tests can be ordered. The single item of pre-breeding advice, at Good Practice level, is to prioritise genetic diversity. In practice that means running the RKC's online COI lookup before every mating, aiming for a coefficient of inbreeding (COI) at or below the breed's annual average, and spreading litters across a wider range of stud dogs rather than relying on a few popular sires. The RKC's breeding for health framework lists support for genetic diversity in small populations among its 2026 priorities.

The breed is in Breed Watch Category 1, so no breed-specific points of concern have been flagged for show judges, and the RKC lists no additional breed-specific breeding restrictions. Some breeders choose voluntary screening such as hip scoring under the BVA/KC Hip Dysplasia Scheme, which is open to dogs of any breed once they are at least a year old. Ask what has been done and look up registered dogs on the RKC Health Test Results Finder. Screening lowers risk but cannot guarantee a puppy's health.
